Parel (ISO: Paraḷ; pronunciation: [pəɾəɭ]) is a suburb in the south of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Parel, once one of Bombay’s Seven Islands, became an industrial center after the islands were unified. Parel had hosted a large number of textile mills but has progressively transformed into a business center, with most mills being replaced by commercial office spaces and high-rise residential buildings.

History of Parel

Parel was originally a separate island, one of Bombay’s Seven Islands.

The Parel Relief (Parel Shiva) is a significant monolithic relief depicting the Hindu god Shiva in seven forms. The ASI dates it to the late Gupta period, which occurred in the fifth or sixth century AD. It was discovered in Parel during the construction of a road in 1931 and relocated to the neighbouring Baradevi Temple, where it is now worshipped in its own room. The name Parel is derived from the Parali Vaijanath Mahadev temple, which was devoted to Lord Shiva.

An inscription dated January 26, 1187 (Paurnima of Magha, Saka 1108) was discovered there. It recalls a grant made by Shilahara king Aparaditya II for a Vaidyanatha temple from the revenues of an orchard in the village of Mahavali (near Kurla).

In 1771, William Hornby, the Governor of Bombay, moved into the ancient friary, which became known as Government House, and several mills were built nearby. In 1883, the Governor’s wife died of cholera in the mansion, and the Governor’s Mansion was relocated to Malabar Point two years later. During the 1890 plague epidemics, the ancient Government House was leased to the newly established Haffkine Institute.

It was a district in Girangaon that became the focal point of the 1982 Great Bombay Textile Strike.
