The Green Line Metro in Mumbai is currently under construction and is expected to be completely operational by 2030. It is a completely elevated metro route designed to provide Mumbai residents with a hassle-free travel experience and convenient transportation options.

The MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) oversees the Green Line Metro Station project. The MMRDA would also build metro stations and depots in Thane’s Vikhroli and Owala villages.

The 57.18 km-long completely elevated Green Line Metro Station (Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11) is now under construction and will connect Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road), Gaimukh, Kasarawadavali, Wadala, and CST with 48 stations. On September 27, 2016, the Maharashtra cabinet approved the Green Metro Line 4 corridor proposal, and on December 24, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone.

The Green Line Metro Mumbai construction is divided into five packages using the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) methodology. A joint venture between Reliance Infrastructure and the Italian multinational corporation Astaldi S.p.A. was awarded three packages totalling Rs. 1,584 crores (USD 200 million). Under these plans, a 32.32-kilometer corridor between Wadala and Kasarvadavali in eastern Mumbai would be constructed along LBS Marg and the Eastern Express Highway.

Tata Projects Limited and China Harbour Engineering Company formed a joint venture to secure the final two packages, which totalled Rs. 1,048 crores (USD 130 million). The proposed Green Line metro was launched to give local inhabitants more transport options.

The first phase of the Green Line began in 2023, with many interchanges connecting to other metro lines, buses and suburban rail services. MMRDA publicly revealed the line’s official hue on February 28, 2020, as part of a comprehensive branding campaign to create style guidelines, with consultation from Systra MVA Consulting.

Line 4 Mumbai Metro – Change in Station List

Suman Nagar and Amar Mahal, which were formerly planned stations for Mumbai Metro Line 4, will not be built. The MMRDA decided to close these stations during a meeting headed by the Maharashtra Chief Minister on December 12, 2023.

Building the stations would have been costly, whereas removing them would save money.

There is insufficient room in the places where stations should be built.

The Amar Mahal station was judged impractical due to the area’s high-tension wire towers and flyovers. There was not enough land available to erect the full station.

Suman Nagar station was decommissioned to save money. It would have been situated at the intersection of Sion-Trombay Road and the Eastern Express Highway (EEH).

With the elimination of the Suman Nagar station, the Siddharth Colony station will be moved to connect with the EEH station on Metro Line 2B.

Line 4 now has 30 stops, with each station scheduled at a distance of one kilometre.

Green Line Metro or Line 4A of Mumbai Metro

Line 4A, which connects Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh, is set to be extended to the north by 2.88 kilometres. In March 2019, the MMRDA invited proposals; in September 2019, J Kumar Infraprojects was awarded civil construction contract worth Rs 342 crore.

The Mumbai Metro Green Line 4A, estimated to cost Rs 949 crore, will include a 20-hectare metro car depot near Mogharpada. This under-construction route will include two elevated stations: Gowniwada and Gaimukh.

Green Line Mumbai Metro Current Status

The following is the current status of Mumbai Metro Line 4 and its extension Line 4A.

Trial Runs Underway on a Section of the Line

The first portion of the metro line, a 10.5 km stretch from Cadbury Junction to Gaimukh, is now undergoing trials. Line 4 and its extension Line 4A share a single segment, which is nearing completion.

Following trial runs on the metro section, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) will give the go-ahead for passenger operations.

Timeline of Expected Completion and Inauguration

Government authorities and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have claimed that passenger service on the Cadbury Junction-Gaimukh route will begin in December 2025.

Metro Line 4, which runs from Wadala to Kasarvadavali, will be finished in August 2026.

Future Plans of Mumbai Metro Green Line

The MMRDA is investigating interim measures, such as using inspection pits after Gaimukh station to allow trial runs to continue even in the absence of the permanent depot.

The government also intended to lay the groundwork for a 4A road extension from Gaimukh to the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Mira-Bhayander.

Green Line Metro or Line 10 of Mumbai Metro

The Green Line Mumbai Metro Line 10 connects various regions of the city and covers roughly 9.2 km. It has four stations, beginning in Gaimukh and finishing at Shivaji Chowk.

The line will run parallel to the Thane-Bhayandar Highway, connecting with Mumbai Metro Line 9 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk. The project is anticipated to cost Rs 3,600 crore.

PM Modi laid the foundation stone for Mumbai Metro Line 10 on September 7, 2020. The line will connect Mira-Bhayander, Thane, Borivali, and the remainder of Mumbai, cutting travel time by 50-75%.

Mumbai Metro Line 11 has been proposed, with 15 metro stations spanning 17.5 kilometers. The route consists of both underground and elevated metro stations. The projected metro line will have an Anik Depot at Wadala. The metro line will begin in Wadala in eastern Mumbai and end at the Gateway of India in the south.

According to officials, the proposal for the development of Mumbai Metro Line 11 is being reviewed. It is expected that the Maharashtra Urban Development Department will sanction it soon. Once authorized, it will be submitted to the Central Government for ultimate approval.

Mumbai Metro Line 11 – South Mumbai Underground Shift

The reconceptualization of Metro Line 11 marks a watershed moment in Mumbai’s Green Line expansion. Originally, the Mumbai Metro Line 11 was planned to include both elevated and underground trains.
